Dr. Jimmy Randolph Pinkham, 79, died Saturday, April 13, 2024, at home surrounded by his family.

The family will greet friends Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 4 PM to 6 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Interment will be later at Oakland Cemetery.

Jimmy was born on March 26, 1945 in Raleigh, North Carolina, the son of Jesse R. and Margaret Strickland Pinkham. As an adult, he managed to build both a pleasant life and successful career in Iowa City amongst Yankees. He was married to Alecia Smith from 1971 to 1977 and to Carol Sloniker from 1979 until her death in 2014.

Jimmy earned his B.S., D.D.S., and M.S. degrees in the southern part of heaven at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and began his academic career at the University of Iowa in 1972. He served as the Chairman of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Louisville from 1979-1983 and returned to the University of Iowa to serve as Professor and Department Head of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry until his retirement in 2003.

Jimmy’s professional expertise in the behavioral management of children during dental appointments led to speaking engagements at dental schools and congresses throughout the world. He was a longtime member of both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Society of Dentistry for Children, the latter for which he served as President in 1994. Jimmy was also a Paul Harris Fellow with the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club.

A lifelong Tarheel and Hawkeye sports fan, he enjoyed attending wrestling, basketball, football, and field hockey games. He insisted death wait until after this year’s championship games for the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments. His family regrets they could not send him off with the TV remote in hand. He loved the music of Elvis Presley; fresh seafood; Emerald Isle, North Carolina; and Machu Picchu, Peru. He hated beets, bureaucracy, and bridges.

Jimmy is survived by his beloved companion (aka main squeeze) of nine years, Marilee Fowler of Iowa City; daughter Tylila Pinkham of Atlanta, Georgia; son Beau Pinkham and daughter-in-law Sara J. Pinkham of Iowa City; and brother-in-law Kim Sloniker of Lone Rock, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carol.
