Dr. Benjamin Jack Wherley

Dr. Benjamin Jack Wherley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, physician, brother and friend entered Heaven’s gates triumphantly on March 7, 2022. He loved the Lord with a servant’s heart and dedicated his life to praising and pleasing God.

Ben was born November 2, 1939, in Coshocton, OH, the son of the late Dr. Harold and Winona Jack Wherley. He was a 1958 graduate of Stone Creek High School where he played basketball and baseball, Heidelberg College where he played baseball, State University of New York at Buffalo where he received his medical degree, and The Ohio State University where he completed his residency in Ophthalmology. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He joined his father and brother, Dr. Daniel Wherley, in ophthalmic practice on the Boulevard in Dover, in 1970, and retired from that practice in 2000.

Ben consistently and faithfully served Christ throughout his adult years. He is fondly remembered by many as the High School Sunday School Class teacher at First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia. He was very active in Big Brothers and Big Sisters and loved spending countless hours with his “little”, Tyler. Ben could also be found weekly serving in the middle school ministry at NewPointe Community Church, leading small group, or teaching the Good News Club at Tuscarawas Valley Elementary.

He leaves his precious wife of nearly 60 years, Suzanne Davies Wherley, whom he married June 16, 1962. Ben and Suzanne together would counsel many pre-marriage couples. They also faithfully cheered on their beloved Indians, Buckeyes and Quakers, and loved solving the puzzles of the day.

He was deeply invested in the lives of all his children and grandchildren, imparting to them a love of Jesus Christ, a bond for home, family and country. Grieving their father’s passing but confident in his eternal home are Rob and wife Renee Wherley of Los Angeles, CA, Andrew and wife Carla Wherley of New Philadelphia, Amy and husband Terrell Menefee of Russell, Ohio, son-in-law, Drol Alarid of Phoenix, AZ, and Benjamin and wife Amy Wherley of College Station, Texas. He is surely now embracing and dancing with dear daughter Kathryn (Katie) Wherley Alarid who preceded him in death. Saddened by the loss of their Grandpa “W” are Jordan, Tanner, Faith, Madeline, Domion, Tahlia, Conner, Andrew, Gabriel, Grant, Gavin, River, Rowan, and the greats, Lincoln, Remington (Remi) and Delphia (Fia).

Ben leaves his dearly loved siblings Susan, Dan, Jim, Rachel and Hal, and their spouses and his numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will greet guests during a memorial visitation on Friday, March 11, 2022, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the NewPointe Community Church at Dover where a service celebrating Ben’s life will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 10:30 AM. Private inurnment will take place in the Stone Creek Cemetery.

Memorial gifts can be made to NewPointe Community Church, the Jesus Film Project, The Voice of the Martyrs, and Samaritan’s Purse.
