Doris Jean Stanley
- August 2, 2021
Doris Jean Stanley, 94, passed away peacefully at her home in Arden, NC, on July 30, 2021, surrounded by her four beloved children.
Born on April 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Lena Satterfield and the loving wife of the late Robert Morgan Stanley. She was preceded in death by twin sister Eileen Weber, sister Edith Morgan and husband Frank, brother Earl Satterfield and wife Alma, sisters-in-law Eleanor Falkenstein and husband Leo, and Ruth Yeager and husband William. She was the last member of our family’s “greatest generation”.
The first 84 years of Doris’s life were spent in Fairmont, WV, where she grew up, met and married Bob, her husband of 47 years. She then made the courageous move to NC in order to be closer to the family where she was a resident of LauralHurst Senior Living Community in Columbus, NC, and more recently Trinity View Retirement Community of Arden, NC.
Doris was a wonderful homemaker who always put others first. She was a person with a generous spirit and a good friend and neighbor who loved her church in Benton’s Ferry. Her many talents consisted of baking, oil painting, and wood carving as well as participating as a Jolly Bowler for many years. Nothing, however, brought Doris more joy than spending time with her family during large gatherings at the beach and around the holidays.
Doris is survived by children Lynn Matthews and husband Les of Mills River, NC, Myra Brinson and husband Jerry of Morehead City, NC, Randall Stanley and wife Deborah of Stockton, MD, and Gwenn Valentine and husband Michael of Sterling, VA. Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren Joshua Matthews and wife Jennifer, Adam Matthews and wife Erin, Kelly Wilson and husband Kortney, Ethan Stanley and fiancé Megan Muir, Logan Stanley, Peyton Valentine, Ashlynn Valentine, seven great-grandchildren, several dearly loved nieces, and nephews, and many good friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Benton’s Ferry United Methodist Church, 1126 Serene Drive, Pleasant Valley, WV 26554. A private graveside service will be held in Fairmont at a later date.
