Donald Mateo
Donald (Don “Papa”) Mateo, 60, of Ashland, passed away Monday, December 6, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Born November 21, 1961 in Guam, he was the son of Pedro Mateo and Rosario (Castro) Cruz.
Don worked in the health field as a STNA. He was a big jokester and storyteller who loved to spend time with his family especially at bar-b-q’s. Don loved anything that had to do with food and watched the cooking channel whenever possible. He enjoyed fishing, joy riding, doing crossword puzzles and listening to music especially Chamorro and the Bee Gees. He loved his dog, Holly.
He is survived by his children, Veronica (Ryan) Hershiser, Judd (Cassie) Mateo, Topanga Nagel, John (Ren) Cruz and Joey Cruz; the mother of his children, Jennifer Mateo; his siblings, Ray Mateo, Peter (Jocelyn) Mateo, Joseph Mateo, Frank (Andrea) Mateo, Catherine Mateo, Allan Mateo, Francis Mateo, Nick Mateo and Jesse Mateo; his grandchildren, Zander and Rylan Mateo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Judy Mendiola and Rose Rose; and two nephews, Steve Mateo and Curtis Mateo.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland conducted by Rev. Christopher R. Thomas. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday.
