He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Eveler, his son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Jessica, daughter, Kimberly, his stepchildren Katy, Leah, Jess, and Jacob, his mother Irene Groom, and ten grandchildren.
Don was born in North Carolina on July 21st, 1964, and was adopted shortly thereafter by his loving parents, George and Irene Groom. Both his mother and his father served in the U.S. Army, a tradition that he would follow and that would later be continued by his son, Benjamin. Don graduated from West Hardin High School in 1982 and was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He graduated West Point in 1986 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry. He served as a Mortar Platoon leader in Wiesbaden, Germany and a staff officer at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Don earned his law degree and transitioned out of the Army in 1995. After earning his J.D., he worked as an immigration lawyer in Kentucky and Washington, D.C., helping many individuals during that time. After 9/11, Don decided to join the Army reserves, eventually rejoining active duty and deploying oversees in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2015.
Don loved God, his family, and his country. He was a loving son, husband, father, and friend. For his devotion, his smile, his humor, his vast knowledge of 70’s music, and for so many other reasons, he will be sorely missed.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Jude’s Hospital or Disabled Veterans Association.
