Donald J. Lieving

Donald J. Lieving Jr., 83, formally of Waterman, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 20th, 2023 in Ashton. He was born September 29th, 1939 to Donald and Zella (Rickard) Lieving, Sr. in Hartford, West Virginia. Don was raised in Waterman, where he served in many capacities for the village and also where he raised his son Terry A. Lieving. He was the son of the Waterman Police Chief.

Don spent many years working hard to support his family. He retired from Northern Illinois University, as the Supervisor of Building Services and furthered his career as an entrepreneur in several avenues. Selling/buying antiques, attending auctions, and reading history articles are just a few of his passions.

He is survived by his grandchildren Daniel (Amy Sheahan) Lieving, Sarah (Rich) Roach, Tyler (Konai) Lieving, and Kyle (Lauren Tomac) Lieving. His pride and joy in life were his eight great-grandchildren; Ellie and Noah Lieving; Taeden, Raelynn, Charlie, and Brennan Roach; and Levi and Asher Lieving. Also, his special friend, Joyce Schirmer.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Roy and Ervin Lieving, and infant son, Tracy Lieving.

Don enjoyed spending time outside, boating, fishing, watching barges on the river, and planting flowers.  He especially enjoyed watching his Westerns on TV. But, nothing brought a smile to his face more than spending time with his family.

Per his wishes, there will be no services. A private gathering will be held at a later date for family and friends.

The family would like to extend extreme gratitude to Unity Hospice for their kindness, compassion, and care during this transition.

Arrangements are entrusted by Nash-Nelson Funeral Homes & Crematory, www.NelsonFuneralHomes.com or (815) 264-3362.
