Donald A. Mews was born March 3, 1935, in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Edna (Maas) Mews. He attended St. Paul’s School in Williamsburg and graduated from Conroy High School. Donnie was united in marriage to Velma Martinson on June 5, 1954, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. He farmed most of his life and owned Mews Farms Trucking, Inc. He was also a Jacques Seed Corn dealer for many years and enjoyed vacations with his seed corn family. Donnie was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served on many boards and was an elder for several years. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed attending football games with his family and friends. His favorite activities were playing cards with his family and watching his grandchildren in their sporting events. Donnie passed away Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022 at Briarwood Healthcare Center in Iowa City at the age of 87 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; four children, Kenneth Mews of Marengo, Kathryn (Richard) Dermody of Houston, Texas, Keith (Lynne) Mews and Kay (Kevin) Garringer, all of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren, Thomas Mews, Grant Dermody, Colton Mews, Gage (Dana) Mews, Cameron Mews, Layton (Amelia) Garringer and Mallory Garringer; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Oaklynn Garringer; a sister, Dorcas (Melvin) Sherman; a brother-in-law, Robert Hook; sisters-in-law, Annabelle Richardson, Maxine Jeske and Shirley Owens; and a brother-in-law, Donald Martinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Joan Hook.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be at the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for St. Paul Lutheran Church or Essence of Life Hospice.
