David E. Smith

David E. Smith, 81, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at his home. He was born August 20, 1939, in Springfield, the son of John David and Evelyn Ilene Keene Smith.

Survivors include three daughters, Johanna (Steven) Pratt of Hettick, Lesa (Joe) Boatman of Carlinville and Sara (Bob) Branson of Springfield; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two nephews, Rick and Keith Smith, and two nieces, Debbie Raider and Kathy Cox.

David is preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, James Cartwright Smith.

David graduated from Glenwood High School. He lived in Virden for 25 years, then moved back to Springfield. He worked for Hendricks Home Furnishings in Virden for 20 years then he did construction work for Kenny Schnapp Construction. He had a great gift for woodworking, and he made lots of things and donated them to the St. Jude auction. He liked woodworking, spending time with family, riding horses, and going to auctions. David was a United States Navy veteran.

A celebration of David’s life will be held later in October.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis for his great grandson, Carsen James Koprowitz or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
