Daniel “Danny” Lee O’Connell, 89, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully from natural causes with and Erin and Kelly by his side and Colleen and Anthony on speakerphone on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church by the Rev. Richmond Dzekoe. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the vigil or rosary may visit with the family from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and on Saturday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Danny is survived by his three daughters, Erin O’Connell of Belle Plaine, Kelly O’Connell of Cedar Rapids and Colleen O’Connell and her son, Anthony of Independence, Ky.; sisters, Patricia Davis and Sr. Brigid Helen O’Connell, RSM; sister-in-law, Margie O’Connell; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Laura O’Connell; and siblings, George O’Connell, Mayme Winfrey, Rita Hohenshell, JoAnne Sullivan and Mike O’Connell.
Danny was born in Linn County on Sept. 18, 1933, the son of Lee and Mary Murphy O’Connell. He graduated from Atkins High School then entered the Army serving his country during the Korean conflict. On July 16, 1960, he married Laura Young in Fairfax. Danny worked in sales at Morton Buildings and later at Payless Cashways, retiring in 1995.
Danny was an outdoorsman who loved being in the timber and having bonfires. He was always busy and enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, telling jokes and working jigsaw puzzles. Danny was the Linn County Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in 1953. Danny will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
