Clifford “Al” Friederich, 76 of Marion, passed away on May 14, 2024. Al’s Celebration of Life will be held July 20 from 1-5 P.M. at the American Legion in Marion. A short Memorial Service will be held at 3 P.M. with a Military Rights Service at 4 P.M. Entombment will take place
at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids at a later date.

September 4,
1947, in
Elkader,
Iowa, the
son of
Harold and
Joleen
(Staack)
Friederich. Al
attended
Jefferson High
School and
made the decision
to enlist
in the Marine Corps
on
September 7, 1964, at the
age of 17. He received the
Purple Heart for active-duty
wounds that he received
from
a mortar round on
August
18th, 1965. He was also
awarded the Expeditionary Service Award. Al was the youngest man to be promoted to Corporal while serving with the Marine Corp in Great Lakes, Illinois. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Al then worked at Collins Radio from 1966 to 1970. He started his law enforcement career by joining the Marion Police department from 1970 to 1980. He then joined the Linn County Sheriff’s department in 1980, retiring in 2003 as a Lieutenant.
Survivors include his sons David (Kimberly) Friederich, Daniel Friederich, Brad (Beth) Moores; daughter Christine Grant; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents.
Al was an avid hunter who enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley and won several awards running his Labrador retrievers in field trials. Al was a wonderful father and friend who will be missed by many.
