Charles McGary

Charles W. McGary, a resident of Williamsburg Landing, passed away on February 26, 2021. The son of Charles McGary and Pearl Ferree McGary, he was born on December 12, 1929 and was raised with four siblings in rural New Castle, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Shenango High School, Westminster College (BS, 1951), and Purdue University (PhD, 1955). He had a long career as research chemist, research director, and vice president of research and development. He was inventor and co-inventor of 75 US Patents in the field of polymers and bio-materials and published multiple papers in chemistry and polymers.
Chuck and his beloved wife Dolly were high school sweethearts, and were married on November 24, 1949, and raised their family of 5 children, Chris, Susan, Diane, Lynn, and Jeff in Charleston, WV. Chuck and Dolly also lived in Lafayette, IN, Darien, CT, Dayton, OH, Basel, Switzerland, and Morris Plains, NJ. They retired in Governor’s Land, Williamsburg, VA in 1993 and spent the last 13 years in Williamsburg, Landing where Chuck served on the Landing Resident Association Council, as Resident Association President, and as a member of the Landing Corporate Board. The McGary-seven and their families communicated, met often, and enjoyed a wonderful togetherness for many years.
He is survived by his wife, confidant, and friend of 76 years, Deloris Maxine Glasser McGary. Their loving children are: Chris Wesley (Joni), Susan Elaine, Diane Lee Avjean, Lynn Marie Foley (Michael), and Jeffrey Scott McGary. Their nine grandchildren include Katelyn McGary Shipper, Megan McGary Rayl, Jack McGary, Suzzanne Lohr, Rachal Lohr Dean, Jeffrey Lohr, Lauren
Avjean Parzanese, Brian Avjean, Lukas Foley, and eleven great grandchildren. He is also survived by William (Bill) Jones, Nellie McGary, and Bette McGary.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Harriette Wilson (Bob), Margaret Jones, Thomas (Tom), and Francis (Fritz).
