Charles A. Farina

Charles A. Farina, 91, of Mansfield, died Friday, December 3, 2021 at Elmcroft of Ontario. The son of the late Felix and Anna Greco Farina. He graduated from Galion High School with the class of 1950.

In late 1950 at the start of the Korean War, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving from 1951-1953. He was sent to West Germany for 18 months where he was on the 43 Division Infantry Boxing Team winning the light heavy weight championship of that division, and traveling to different Army camps in West Germany fighting those teams. In March of 1953 he was honorably discharged. He returned to Galion where he worked at various industries. He joined the Galion Police Department in 1959 where he attained rank of Lieutenant in 1962 and in 1976 was voted runner up as Policeman of the Year. The following year was voted 1977 Policeman of the Year.

In 1970 a friend of Charly’s got him a date with a lady that his friend worked with at the Radio Station in Mansfield, this is when he met the love of his life whom he married in 1973 and spent the rest of his life with, Doris G. Farina.

In 1983, he retired from the Galion Police Department and was in partnership with his brother, Angelo Farina in a neighborhood tavern, The Roundtable in Mansfield, Ohio. They sold the tavern in 1989. A friend got him a job as a school bus driver for Mansfield City Schools for 1 year. Another friend got him a job as security officer at Kingwood Center part time as fill in officer. From there he went to work at Therm-O-Disc working there for 10 years until he permanently retired in his 70’s.

He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Mansfield. A life member of National Rifle Association, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #71 Galion, Police and Fire Retirees of Ohio, the US Department of Veterans Affairs, and Amvets Post #26 in Mansfield.

He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Hancock of Bucyrus; his grandsons, Nathan and Anthony Tanner; his great-grandchildren, Keely Wells and Charles D. Farina; and numerous nieces and nephews including his special niece, Amy (Rob) Skropits. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life, Doris McLauglin Farina; his son, Charles “Bub” A. Farina; his grandson, Charles J. Farina; and his siblings, Gertie Sherman, Carmella Feora, Rose Jurgeson, Theresa Fisher, Mary Foti, Angelo Farina, John Farina, and Josephine Burge.

Family and friends may visit from 2-3 pm on Friday, December 10, 2021 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd. Rev. Joe Ashby will officiate services immediately following at 3:00 pm with military honors being performed by Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery at a later date.
