Catherine “Katie” Altman
Catherine “Katie” Altman, 97, of Lexington, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, May 9, 2021 where she was reunited with her loving husband.
Katie was born on November 14, 1923 in Morral, Ohio. She was the daughter of Franklin and Minnie (Neal) Meadows. While her husband was off fighting in World War II, Katie worked in a factory to support the troops and her husband. Throughout her life she worked at various local grocery stores, retail establishments, then as Conference Secretary for twelve years. She ended her career as a registrar in the ER from Mansfield MedCentral Hospital in 1998. She enjoyed playing cards; especially euchre, Mexican train dominos, tending to her flowers, watching the birds and playing with her dog, Sammy.
She loved her family and loved her Lord and Savior above all. She was a member of Grace Point Free Methodist Church and attended Freedom Ridge Church. She was a faithful supporter and dedicated wife to her husband in his ministry as a Pastor. As a minister’s wife, Katie walked hand in hand with her husband serving the church in many different capacities over his thirty years of service. She had a true servant’s heart and was an inspiration to others.
A talented baker, Katie’s family loved her homemade pies and cakes. Everyone greatly enjoyed family dinners at the Altman home whether Sunday dinner or a holiday feast all were special and was always prepared with much love. She was nicknamed “The Bead Lady” for her unique beaded Christmas trees, snowmen, and Uncle Sam designs. Katie has touched many lives and her unique demeanor was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. She had a way of making her family all feel special in their own unique ways.
Katie leaves to cherish many special and fond memories for her family; her grandchildren, Matthew Corman of North Carolina, Cathy (Tim) Lawrence of Oxford, MI, Juli (Roy) Craft of Lexington, Jerald Shaffer of Lexington, and Rebecca (Steve) Byrd of Perrysburg; her great-grandchildren, Matt (Abigail) Corman Jr., Dr. Michelle (Stuart Anderson) Corman, Cathy (Patrick) De Armas, Nicholas (Erin) Brogan, Jodi Craft, Jarod Lawrence, Joslyn Lawrence, Jacob Bilger, and Elyza Byrd; her great-great-grandchildren, Ashton Anderson, Amara Chrzan, and Matthew Corman III; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 71 years whom she married on April 19, 1941, Rev. Ray D. Altman Jr.; her daughters, Sandra R. Altman and Nancy L. Bechtel; her grandchildren, Jamie S. Shaffer and Jeffrey A. Shaffer; a great-grandson, Matthew Byrd; her brothers, Neal, Wayne, and Walter Meadows; and her sisters, Avonell Meadows and Irene Moser.
Family and friends may visit from 4:00-8:00 pm on Friday, May 14, 2021 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington Springmill Rd. Rev. Paul Walter will officiate the funeral service at the Grace Point Free Methodist Church, 683 Portland Way N. Galion, OH on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 1:00 pm with an additional hour of visitation from 12:00-1:00 pm at the church. Katie will be laid to rest in Mansfield Memorial Park. As Katie has been a giving vessel her whole life, please consider making a memorial contribution in her honor to Hospice of North Central Ohio or Grace Point Free Methodist Church.
