Carolyn Martin

Cedar Rapids

Carolyn Martin, 90, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away at her home on December 26th surrounded by family.

Carol was born June 20, 1934, in Primghar, Iowa, the seventh child of Harry and Emma Hill. On September 15, 1957, she married Burton Martin in Sutherland, Iowa.

Carol is survived by three children, Craig (Ming) Martin of Connecticut, Chris (Brittony) Martin of Cedar Rapids, and Michelle (Bob) Siegert of Springville, Iowa, as well as several Usher, Siegert, and Martin grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Burt, grandson, Nick, and her brothers and sisters.

Carol was born and raised in northwest Iowa and spent her adult life in Cedar Rapids. After spending many years working at Sears, she followed her passion for examining the city financials and following the money. Carol worked as an activist and advocate for the citizens of Cedar Rapids and, with her husband, created and lead Citizens for Responsible Government with a goal of increasing transparency, accountability and accessibility of local government.

Carol was known for her dedication to Freedom of Information and being a voice for the “little guy”. Vital to her efforts was ensuring she was consistently well-informed and had done the research to back up her assertions. She was featured in local newspaper articles for her efforts and proudly appeared in a video promoting Freedom of Information. She had a “tab” at the clerk’s office, as she so frequently requested information on a variety of topics.

In addition to her contributions to the city, Carol enjoyed gardening, crafting, and spending time with her family and friends.

To say that mom didn’t care for funerals would be an understatement. So in lieu of services, we ask that anyone wishing to honor her character make a donation to a children’s organization of their choice.
