Calvin Lewis Casey
Calvin Lewis Casey died peacefully in his Williamsburg home on April 22, 2021 in the presence of his two children. He was 85. He is survived by his son, Lewis Coleman Casey of Williamsburg and daughter, Catherine Casey Nottingham (Charles Denmead Nottingham) of Washington, DC, and his two grandsons, Garner Lewis Nottingham, and Charles Southard Nottingham. He is also survived by his two brothers, the Reverend Robert Tewning Casey (Marilyn) and the Reverend Carlton Downing Casey (Beth); by his three nephews and two nieces, Brian Nelson Casey, the Reverend Helen Elizabeth Casey-Rutland, Winston Casey, Benjamin Casey and Carolyn Casey-Fassbach; and by his nieces and nephews by marriage, Ercil Howard Wroth, Lyndsay Christine Howard, Peter James Schaefer and John MacDonald Schaefer.
Lewis Casey was married for 48 years to Ercil Howard Casey until her death in 2010. After marrying in 1962, Lewis and Ercil settled in Richmond where Lewis worked in the executive offices of the Thalhimer’s Department Store, starting out in the executive training program, and rising over a 32-year career to the position of Divisional Vice President before retiring in 1992. In partnership with his brothers, Lewis was instrumental in the successful development of family-owned land in James City County, including the New Town Williamsburg 365-acre mixed-use community and the WindsorMeade community.
Lewis was born at Buxton Hospital in Newport News and reared in Williamsburg. He is the son of Carlton Coleman Casey and Olive Downing Casey. He graduated from Mathew Whaley High School where he played trombone in the school band. He enjoyed many horseback rides after school and church with friends along the bridal paths of the College of William and Mary. Lewis also graduated from Asbury College (Wilmore, Kentucky) and Emory University School of Business (Atlanta, Georgia).
Lewis maintained close ties to the Williamsburg community his entire life, eventually moving back to his native hometown in 2015. He lived at the WindsorMeade Independent Living Community where he enjoyed socializing with friends and neighbors. Lewis was a longtime member of Reveille United Methodist Church in Richmond and Williamsburg United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday May 3, 2021 at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg.
