- January 7, 2022
Betty Harmon, 99, of Dover, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2021.
Born Betty Lou Schaefer on July 17, 1922 in Burlington, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Max and Ila (Riggs) Schaefer. In 1940, Betty graduated from Burlington High School and attended Western Illinois University but suspended her education after three years to work as a civil employee of the United States Army at Mayo General Hospital at Galesburg, Illinois, during World War II. It was there that she met her husband, Kenneth D. Harmon and the two were married in the base chapel on December 31, 1944 and began a marriage that lasted for over 72 years.
The couple moved to Dallas, Texas for a few years while Kenneth attended photography school. He then opened Harmon Photography with his brother, Ray in 1950 and Betty began her teaching career soon after. Over the course of 25 years, she taught business subjects at the former Stone Creek and Indian Valley South High Schools as well as Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School and eventually obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from Kent State University.
Betty was a 55-year member of the Dover First United Methodist Church, a member of the church’s Ruth Circle, a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association and a member of the Tuscarawas Valley Duplicate Bridge Association. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, traveling and meeting up with friends and family.
Betty is survived by her son, Tom Harmon (Cindy James), of Uhrichsville and many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Francis Yoder.
A graveside service will be held Friday, January 14, 2022 at 11 AM in Dover Burial Park at Dover with Rev. David St. Aubin officiating. A reception will follow in the Hospitality Room of the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Dover First United Methodist Church, 1725 North Wooster Avenue, Dover, Ohio 44622.
