Barbara J. Richter

Barbara Jean Richter, age 89, of Massillon, died October 15, 2022, while in the care of Grace Hospice following a period of declining health.

Born February 17, 1933 in Dover Township, she was the daughter of the late George Hess and Edna (Maurer) Hess Marshall.

After graduating from Dover High School in 1951, she married the love of her life, Fred Richter, on February 17, 1952. She was a military wife, caring for their two children while her husband served our country in the United States Air Force.

Professionally, Barb enjoyed a secretarial career with AAA and other institutions. She also was an avid bowler, sewist, and photographer. She gifted her grandchildren with treasured photo books that captured memories she caught on film.

She is survived by her children, Vicki (Martin) Seifert of North Canton and Carl (Gale) Richter of Urbana, Maryland; her grandchildren, Matthew (Suzanne) Richter, Michelle (Dennis) Volpe, Megan (Kevin) MacCauley, Martin (Nicole) Seifert and Melissa (Keith) Mistretta; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Patty (Ray) Halter of Massillon, Jackie Pritchard, Doris Dotts, Suzie Zifer all of Dover, and George (Barb) Hess of New Philadelphia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Fred who passed away August 21, 2022, Barb was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Angelina Hope Volpe; siblings, Mary Lou VanFossen, Lucille Kopp, Gerald “Sonny” Hess, and Richard Hess.

The family will greet guests on Saturday, October 22, 2022, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia with the funeral beginning at 11:00 AM.  Burial will follow at The Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.

Barb’s family would like to thank Heritage Villa’s and Grace Hospice for their exceptional care given to Barb during his illness.
