Assimina P. “Mina”, nee Koinis, Kouis, age 89, of Chicago and formerly of Nafplion, Greece.  Beloved wife of the late Peter Panos Kouis for 32 wonderful years. Devoted mother to Evelyn, nee Kouis, (John M.D.) Stamelos, Georgia Kouis-Fotiadis (Anastasios Fotiadis), Helen, nee Kouis, Figueroa (Freddie), and Diana Kouis. Cherished Yiayia to Assimina (Ben M.D.), Peter (Elizabeth), Sophia (Christian), Constantine (Christy), Anthea, George F. (Trisha), Olivia, Cynthia, Simone, and George S.  Loving Pro-Yiayia to James Aden, Georgia, Hudson, Elena, Alexander, Kellen, Harrison, Atlas, Leonidas, and Tessa.  Dear sister to Anthoula Faki. Predeceased in death by siblings Giorgo “Georgaki”, Panagiotis “Takis”, Nicholaos “Niko”, Assimina (infant), Basilios “Souli”, Theodoros “Theodoraki”, Emanuelle “Manos”, and Athanasios “Thanos”.

 

Mrs. Kouis, a former restaurant owner along with her husband, Peter, of the Pete’s Freeze ice cream restaurant, and former Tastee-Freeze franchisee, in Chicago’s Lake View neighborhood, known for its delicious ice cream creations, across from the Chicago Cubs baseball team’s home, Wrigley Field, from 1960 to 1980.

 

 

In 1954, Mrs. Kouis moved to the United States after her marriage to Peter Panos Kouis (deceased).  In 1956, Mrs. Kouis began her family of four children, daughters, Evelyn (Eugenia), Georgia, Helen (Eleni), and Diana (Constantina), growing to ten grandchildren, and ten great- grandchildren.

 

 

Before emigrating to the United States, Mrs. Kouis studied fashion design in Athens, Greece.  Mrs. Kouis was born November 10, 1931, in Nafplion, Greece where she grew up with her loving parents, Konstantinos, City Clerk (deceased), and seamstress, Eleni (deceased), joined by her eight siblings, along with her extended family.

 

 

Prior to that, Mrs. Kouis apprenticed with her mother, Eleni, in her home’s dressmaking business during World War II and post-War period.

 

 

Mrs. Kouis received her fashion design diploma in 1951 from the Tsopaneli Fashion House in Athens, Greece.

 

 

She lived in Chicago, Illinois close to her four daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

 

A visitation will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1017 North LaSalle Dr., Chicago, IL 60610 on Wednesday, November, 10, 2021 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Interment, Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove IL.  May her memory be eternal.
