He was born on Nov. 4, 1924, on his family farm south of Swedesburg, Iowa, to Edwin and Emelia (Lindeen) Anderson. On Dec. 27, 1949, Arvid was united in marriage to Joan Maxwell of Crawfordsville, Iowa. Joan was teaching in Winfield at the time. They gave birth to Kay Maxwell on Aug. 11, 1952, and Edwin Lisle on March 18, 1955.
Arvid’s formal education was in the Olds Consolidated School and he attended Iowa Wesleyan College until enlisting in the U.S. Army. While at Iowa Wesleyan, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
After helping out on the Anderson family farm with his brother Paul, Arvid enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1942. After many months in training, he got on a ship and headed to Japan where he served 13 months overseas. He received an Honorable Discharge from active duty in December 1946. After he returned home, he continued farming with his brother Paul before purchasing the Maxwell farm from Joan’s parents. He was very proud of the Century Farm that he and Joan owned and were stewards of for 73 years.
Arvid was baptized and confirmed in the Swedesburg Lutheran Church and was an active member of the church. He has been an active member of the American Legion for 77 years, a life member of the VFW, a 70-year charter member of the Crawfordsville Lions Club, a 50-year director at Peoples Savings Bank in Crawfordsville, a director and part owner of the Home Feed and Lumber Company in Crawfordsville, and a long time director of the Washington County Fair Board Association.
Arvid had the pleasure to go on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with his son Ed in 2011. He enjoyed seeing all of the armed services memorials and Arlington Cemetery.
To know Arvid was to know he loved the Iowa Hawkeyes. He and Joan were charter members of the I-Club and found so much joy in attending basketball and football games together. He passed on his love for the Hawkeyes to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy will live on through all of them.
Arvid is survived by his wife, Joan, and his children, Kay Trager of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Ed (Leanne) Anderson of Nashua, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Shelby (Tim) Walsten, Tobias, Finley and Anderson of Waterloo, Iowa, Taylor (Amy) Anderson, Leighton, Maxwell, Harlyn and Hayes of Denver, Iowa, and Kaytlyn (Joe) Kuebler of Cedar Falls, Iowa; also survived by a very special Colombian granddaughter, Margarita Rosas of Downers Grove, Ill.; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Lenore Anderson; sister and brother-in-law, Vicky and Meg Bergstrom; and son-in-law, Jim Trager.
