She graduated from Springville High School in 1949, where she earned a musical scholarship for playing the marimba. After graduation, Adeline spent most of her life in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids. She married Artemas Jr. (Red) Hatfield on May 5, 1949, and later divorced. She later married Eldon Hornstein on March 6, 1983.
Adeline was known for being incredibly passionate about helping women and children. She taught self-esteem workshops and lead support groups for women. She was also a devoted volunteer for CASA so that she could be a voice for the rights and needs of children.
Throughout her life, she was known for being a woman who carried herself with class, loved fashion and was always dressed to the nines in high heels and her lipstick. Adeline also was known by many as a strong, hard-working, career-oriented woman who excelled in retail for many years. She later became an entrepreneur when she opened The Bridal Sweet bakery in 1983 with her daughter, Renee. Together, they were known throughout the community for their elaborate wedding cakes, and she built many friendships on Saturday mornings during the Farmer’s Market at the Roundhouse.
Adeline loved hosting Christmas Eve and spending time with her family. She enjoyed decorating her elegant Christmas tree and cooking a gourmet meal with her son, Steve. She also had a very special bond with her grandchildren and her Aunt Sue.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Artemas Jr. (Red) Hatfield; sister, Evelyn Phillips; and her husband, Eldon Hornstein.
Adeline is survived by her children, Steve (Heather) Hatfield, Renee (Steve) Hildebrand, David (Marilyn) Hatfield, Ruby (Tony) Berger; stepchildren, Lynn (Dan) Davis and Mike Hornstein; grandchildren, Tonia (Mike) Powelka, Trevor (Jenni) Hurlbert, Crystal (Gary) Miller, Samantha and Faith Hatfield, Joel Hatfield, Jennifer and Nicholas Dvorak; and bonus grandchildren, Jill (Ryan) Hoff, Justin (Melissa) Davis, and Becca and Matt Hildebrand.
