Anna Ruth McClain

Anna R. McClain was born in Akron Ohio, on July 3rd, 1932 to Burena and Charles McClain.
She received her nursing degree from Harlem Hospital School of Nursing, in New York. Her
educational accomplishments include BSNE earned at The University of Akron, and MSN from
Catholic University of America, Washington D.C. Her professional career goals and
employment focused on Nursing Educational and leadership.
Among her positions as nurse educator, she was an OR instructor at Akron General Medical
Center in Ohio, Instructor of Nursing at Freedmen’s Hospital School of Nursing, D.C., Associate
Professor of Nursing and Assistant Director of Nursing Education, University of the District of
Columbia.
Miss McClain’s membership in the National Black Nurses Association provided opportunities
for participation on health related national committees and meetings. In addition she services
contributing editor for The Journal of National Black Nurses Association. She is past president,
vice president and program committee chairman of The Greater Washington D.C. Area Chapter
of the Black Nurses Association. She served as board member of the D.C. League of Nursing,
nursing program accreditation site visitor and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau
International Honor Society of Nursing.
Miss McClain was honored as one of the “One Hundred Extraordinary Nurses” at a ceremony
sponsored by Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society, Gamma Beta Chapter, Howard University. She
was selected and honored as “Nurse of the Year” by the Greater Washington D.C. Chapter of
the Black Nurse’s Association. In addition, the Social Action Ministry of her church presented a
special recognition award to Miss McClain for services rendered while serving on a committee
established to create a Wellness Center for under insured and under serviced individuals
needing health care.
Miss McClain leaves sister Doris Lindsey and nephew Johnnie (Idora) Player, of Akron, OH.,
nephews, Rodney Player, Don Dawson, of Centerville OH., Gregory (Millie) Hicks of Oxnard
CA., niece Geralyn (Brian Sr.) Roberson of Fresno CA. And a host of other great nieces,
nephews and cousins.
