Zildred Sawyer

Zildred Delores Sawyer, 90, of Hartford, CT, who was the wife of the late William Sawyer, departed this life peacefully and went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 8, 2025, in Lawrenceville, GA. She was born on June 7, 1934, in Chinquapin, NC to the late James Harmon and Emma Wells. She attended local public schools and graduated from Chinquapin High School.

One of the many things Zlidred loved was cooking for family gatherings and being around family and friends. Her favorite holiday was Memorial Day.

Besides her husband and parents, Zildred was predeceased by her children: Cathy, Gregory, and Gary Sawyer of Hartford, CT and her grandsons, Gary Sawyer, Jr. and Jason Free of Hartford, CT.

She was a loyal employee of Pratt & Whitney for over 30 years prior to her retirement.

Zlidred was an active and dedicated member of Bethel AME Church of Bloomfield, a member of Stella Chapter #16, Order of Eastern Stars, and an Honorary Past Commandress of Makalia Court #137 – Daughters. Zildred enjoyed her membership with the Red Hatters as well as the Loyal Lady of Leslie I. Duncan Assembly #74 order of the Golden Circle. Zildred also loved spending time at the Senior Center of Hartford, CT and was an original member of the Superb Social Club. Her special Superb Sisters for over 60 years were Jean Johnson, Barbara Clayton and the late Helen Brinson, Vera Jones Bowen, and Pauline Harris (Evans).

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Colleen Sawyer Mallard and son-in-law, Charles Mallard of Windsor, CT.; daughter-in-law, Latercia Sawyer; brother, Henry Wells of Maryland; granddaughters: Jessica Free, Sonsearae and her husband, Jii Webb, Desmone Sawyer, Michelle Sawyer of Tampa, FL and Keva Deas of GA; grandson, Michael Sawyer and daughter-in-law, Angela Sawyer; great grandsons and granddaughters: Shawn Scott, Devon Fullwood, Mikayla Sawyer, Alicia Sawyer, Genevieve Webb, Messiah Sawyer, Mason Sawyer, Madison Sawyer, and Robin Rothkugel; and great great granddaughter, Alayah Sawyer of Hartford, CT.

Zildred had numerous loving friends and family members who supported her throughout her life. Receiving special love and unwavering support from her granddaughter, Lucretia (Muffin) Sawyer of GA and her niece, Dayra Hicks. She had a close and loving bond with special friends Jean, Kathy, Alberta, and Barbara. Also, with the Hicks and Clayton families.
