William Daniel Smallwood (Scope) was born November 12, 1943 to the late John and Nancy Smallwood of Windsor, NC. He passed away quietly on Monday, May 12, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones in ECU Health Pitt Hospital.
Scope attended Bertie County School. At an early age, he joined Speller’s chapel Church of Christ and was a member of the Male Chorus. There he remained faithful until his health declined. He worked at R & W Chevrolet as a painter until he retired. He was the proud owner and operator of Scope’s Body Shop, a business he loved dearly. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Alma Marie Smallwood and to this union, one daughter was born.
Scope was preceded in death by a son, Michael Rascoe; his parents, John and Nancy Smallwood; three brothers, John, Ralph, and James Smallwood; and three sisters, Queenie, Pearl, and Sarah.
Scope leaves to cherish his memories: three children, Kathy Smallwood of Greenville, NC, Deborah “Vanessa” Swain of Middletown, CT, and Dewayne Wooden (Keyona) of Hampton,VA; two stepchildren, whom he loved as his own, Chris Bass and Darrell Bass of Boston, MA; nine grandchildren, Lashonda Smallwood, Colandra Clemon, Sean Cherry, Isaiah Swain-Turner,
Dreon Morris, Amirrah Dennis, Jahleek Wooden, and Grace Wooden; five step grandchildren, Shakenna, Deetiva, Demonta, Darrell and Tashun H.; nine great grandchildren, one sister, Minnie Lucas of new York, NY; two sisters-in-law, Flossie and Myrtis Smallwood of Windsor, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends’ a very special friend (Ex-wife), Larkerkle B. Smallwood of Williamston, NC; one Godson, Rondell Woodson of New York, NY.
