Uncle Jim, a cherished husband to Auntie Karen, son-in-law to Auntie Helen, father figure, friend, and pillar of the Ballard Community, passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on August 1, 1937 in Seattle, WA, Jim was known for his jovial spirit, kind heart, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends, and was best known for becoming a father figure to his nieces and nephew, and other family making him known to everyone as “Uncle Jim”. Uncle Jim served in the US Army in the early 60’s and was awarded a Sharpshooter Badge during his service. He always spoke fondly of his experience serving his country. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and an indomitable work ethic.
Uncle Jim spent over five decades with his business partner as the co-owner of a beloved tire store in Ballard, WA. The devotion and commitment they had for each other was immeasurable. They created an environment that was unlike any other. Their tire store was based off of excellent customer service and they had life-long return customers. His tireless commitment to his work was paralleled only by his devotion to the different charity organizations he was involved with, including the Mudd Nick Foundation, Toys for Tots, both to help children, and countless other charities he donated to. Uncle Jim’s impact on everyone who crossed his path was significant, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Uncle Jim, as he was affectionately known to many, had a passion for life that was evident to anyone who met him. His love for boating and camping was more than just a hobby; it was a way for him to connect with his wife, friends, and the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. His laughter echoed over the waves, and through the trails, and his joy in sharing these moments were infectious. Jim’s zest for life was a reminder to all to cherish the simple pleasures and the company of loved ones.
Reflecting on Jim’s approach to life, the words of Brian Cagneey come to mind: “The first law of leadership is that your foundation is built through integrity, character, and trust”. Uncle Jim did just that, with every day he spent among us. His life was indeed one he had imagined, filled with success, adventure, and love and support for his family.
As we bid farewell to Uncle Jim, we celebrate the vivacity with which he lived and the countless lives he touched. He was a man of integrity, humor, and profound kindness. His memory will continue to inspire those who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his legacy will endure in the hearts of his family and loved ones. Jim’s journey may have come to an end, but the memories he created will forever be a beacon of light for all who had the honor to share in his remarkable life.
