As locals offer thanks to firefighters from stopping the spread of the C-Hill fire overnight in Carson City, organizers of Friday night’s fireworks are also extending thanks to the community for its efforts to keep Centennial Park clean after thousands came to watch the show.
“We came out this morning and there was a limited amount of trash,” said Molly Walt, CEO of Nevada Rural Counties RSVP, which hosts the annual July 4th fireworks display in Carson City. “We appreciate everyone picking up after themselves. There was a lot of people who came for the show and there are a lot of volunteers here today. It really means a lot.”

Muscle Powered brought at least 8 volunteers and there were Rotary Club of Carson City volunteers as well, making up at least two dozen volunteers who put on their work gloves to clean up after the fireworks show.

“It was a good turnout,” said Bret Sarnquist, trash mob coordinator for Muscle Powered, noting that the organization does community cleanups around once a month along parks, open space areas and trailheads.

A few even said finding trash along the upper and lower parts of the park was a challenge. As he picked up bottle tops and cigarette butts, volunteer Tim McFarren said he was pleased to see the park wasn’t left with loads of trash.
“I think we should applaud the citizens of Carson City for not leaving trash and keeping things clean. It’s amazing,” said McFarren.
The fireworks show went off at 9:31 p.m. with no problems and lasted approximately 22 minutes, with a nice finale, said Walt. She noted people were able to get out of the park without issues, and by 10:30 p.m. the park had pretty much emptied.
“Thank you to the community for picking up after the show, thanks to the volunteers here today and thanks to our sponsors,” Walt said. “This was a real community effort.”
