Viola Lorraine “Pink” Smith departed on May 9, 2025, at home under hospice care. Viola was born on February 15, 1943, in Navassa, NC. She was the daughter of Clarence and Henrietta Alston.

Viola was educated in the Brunswick County School system. Viola relocated to Plainfield, NJ to be with her elder sister, Charlotte Frayer. Through the years, Viola was employed by servals companies, Standard Plastics, Mattel, Burroughs, Unisys Johnson & Johnson.

During her employment at Mattel, she met what would be her future husband. Viola and Nathaniel Smith Sr. joined in marriage on July 23,1966.

Having accepted Christ at an early age, Viola continued her service to the Lord by taking up fellowship with St. John’s Baptist Church in Scotch Plains, New Jersey.

Proceeding Viola in death are her parents, Clarence R. and Henrietta Alston; in addition to her husband of 33 years, Nathaniel Smith Sr.; three brothers, Clearance Alston Sr., William Alston and Gearld Alston; three sisters, Helen Mapson, Charlotte Fryar and Lynn Parish.

Those left to cherish her memories: two daughters, Charlene Alston and Ericka Smith; one son, Nathaniel Smith, Jr. (Lynn); one sister, Terryce Willis (Eulis); one brother, Alvin Alston (Dorris); five grandchildren, Vonetta Alston, Kenyetta Alston, Tanishia Littlejohn, Chavez Smith and Aniya Smith, six great grandchildren, KeAri Alston, Elijah MeKhi, Caylee Smith, Zhuri’ Smith, London Smith, Alani Smith, two godchildren, Laryah McMillan and Jamal Alston. Viola also leaves to cherish her memory her dear in-laws, Richard Smith, Isiah Smith (Gloria), Lillie Binion, Bernice Smith, Ora Marie Fernanders (Edward), Georgia Rawls and Eliza Smith-Tayor (Essex). Four cherished friends, Lorraine Whitley, Annie Ruth McLaurin, Jeanette Barksdale and Earl Clark. Devoted caregiver and friend, Joyce Fort. Also, a host of nephews, nieces, family and friends.

A celebration of Ms. Smith’s life will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Davis Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 335 Main St., Navassa, NC 28451. A viewing will be held one (1) hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow at Meares Cemetery.
