Vernon “Vern” Lee Horn, Jr., age 65, of Springfield, IL, passed away on October 4, 2025. He was born on May 26, 1960.
He attended Southeast High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army as a mechanic from 1978 to 1982. Vern worked for many years at Country Place Condominiums as a maintenance facilitator and later owned his own business, where he worked as a “professional handyman,” as he liked to joke.
Vern adored his family and loved spending time with them. He had a passion for fishing and a heart for helping others. Having received assistance from Spring Street Veterans Renaissance, he was dedicated to paying that kindness forward.
Vern is survived by his sons, Zachary L. (Allison) Horn of Rochester, IL, and Cory L. Horn of Springfield; grandchildren, Logan Horn, Kamilla Horn, and Maverick Horn, all of Rochester; sisters, Connie Kennedy of Springfield, and Veronica (Steve) Sweeney of North Carolina; as well as several other siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon L. Horn, Sr.; son, Dylan Rhoades and his brother, Kevin Horn.
Inurnment with military honors will be announced at a later date.
A Celebration of Life hosted by Vern’s family will take place from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday, November 2, 2025 at VFW Lafore Lock Post 755, 2211 Old Jacksonville Rd, Springfield, IL 62704.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring Street Veterans Renaissance in honor of Vern.
