Vernon Avery Sr.

Vernon Avery Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on October 4, 2025.

Vernon proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army before continuing his lifelong dedication to helping others as a Psychiatric Registered Nurse. His compassion, discipline, and steady presence left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janice Avery; his children Vernon Jr. and Gracie; his stepchildren Lynnette and Larry and Larry’s husband James; and his cherished grandchildren Avery, Gracen, Aniyah, Jace, Dollie, Milo, Aulden, and Addelyn. He was also blessed to meet his great-granddaughter, Ava, who brought him great joy.

Vernon is also survived by his sister Barbara, and his brothers Randy and wife Yvonne, and Sewell and wife Regina. He was preceded in death by his brother Rufus and sister Kerrethel, along with his first wife Alexandria, who now welcome him with open arms.

He was a member of Oakwood Heights Community Church. Being an avid fisherman, he traveled all across the coasts including Florida and Alaska.

Vernon will be remembered for his unwavering sense of duty, his kindness, and the deep love he held for his family. His infectious laughter that no-one could help but join. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he so deeply cherished. He will be remembered by every life he touched along his way which is a number that cannot be accurately counted.
