‘Through Our Eyes: The Women Veterans’ Experience’ and ‘My Life, My Story’ program take center stage at Carson City Leisure Hour Club

The vital work of preserving veterans’ life stories will be the focus of the Leisure Hour Club’s dinner meeting on Thursday, November 13. The event will feature a presentation on the impactful “My Life, My Story” program and its resulting exhibition, “Through Our Eyes: The Women Veterans’ Experience.”

Christina Burr, editor of the My Life, My Story program at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, will be the featured speaker. She will share her personal journey and experiences from the program, which involves a dedicated team of volunteers who transcribe hours of audio recordings to capture the full life narratives of veterans.

A Reno native and Reno High School graduate, Burr brings her own military background to the work, having enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where she drove large trucks before serving as a chauffeur for three different generals. After earning a degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and working with the Washoe County School District, she joined the VA and eventually took the helm of the program.

“Through Our Eyes: The Women Veterans’ Experience” is a compelling outcome of the Reno My Life, My Story initiative. The exhibition features portraits and narratives of sixteen women veterans from the Sierra Nevada Health Care System’s catchment region, representing diverse backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, and all five military branches of service.

Over the years, the Through Our Eyes: The Women Veterans’ Experience exhibit evolved into a traveling roadshow featured throughout Nevada. In 2020, the Innovator’s Network selected the Through Our Eyes: The Women Veterans’ Experience Roadshow as an Innovation Spread. The Boston, Memphis, Cincinnati, and Phoenix VA Medical Centers adopted the Spread to highlight their local women veterans.

The Leisure Hour Club dinner meeting will be held on Thursday, November 13. Reservations are required by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 6. To reserve a spot, please call 775.302.8820 or email lhcreservations@gmail.com. New members are welcome to join the club. Annual membership dues are $25.
