Sonja “Sunnye” Ruth Robinson, 82, of Wellington, KS died peacefully in her home on July 12, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. She is now eternally in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Sunnye was born on November 2, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas. As an infant, she and her mother Selma moved back to Texas to be with family. During her childhood, she and her family lived in various towns in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico to include Abilene, TX, Hobbs, NM, Roswell, NM, and Alamogordo, NM where she graduated from High School in 1960. During her childhood, her friends and family gave her the nickname of “Sunnye” because of her big smile and upbeat personality.
Sunnye and family moved to Wellington in 1968. She was a wonderful, loving mother to her daughter Brenda and son Randy as they grew up in Wellington. She worked at First National Bank (Impact Bank) as a Bank Teller from 1977 – 2004. Her smiling face greeted so many Wellington folks during her career. She was loved by patrons and colleagues alike, often with people lining up just for Sunnye’s teller window. In 2004, following retirement from the bank, she became a “para” teacher working at Lincoln Elementary. God used her love and compassion for children to truly have an impact on their young lives. As it had at the bank, her loving spirit, big smile, and sense of humor quickly endeared her to teachers and staff as well. In 2015 she transitioned into full retirement to spend more time with her husband, Mike, and to love on her grandsons. Sunnye will be missed but she lives on in the hearts and memories of her family and friends.
Sunnye is survived by her husband of 30 years, Mike Robinson, daughter Brenda and husband Pete Koerner (Winfield, KS), son Randy and wife Adria (Adamstown, MD). Six grandsons; Lukas Koerner (Winfield), Gavin Koerner (Winfield), Drake Koerner (Wellington), Kolten Koerner (Danville, KS), Brett Cole (Washington, D.C.), Grant Cole (Los Angeles, CA).
Sunnye is preceded in death by her mother Selma Wiest, father Joseph Wiest, grand-mother Ola Mae Wiest, brother Jody Wiest, and sister Jerry Kephart (Wiest).
A Memorial Service for Sunnye will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Cornejo Funeral Home & Crematory, 1030 Mission Road, Wellington, KS.
