Shirley Whitaker Massey

Shirley Whitaker Massey, aged 86, peacefully passed away on August 27, 2025, in her hometown of Henderson County, North Carolina. She was born on January 26, 1939, also in Henderson County, and throughout her life, she remained a member of this community.

Shirley dedicated many years of her professional life working as a bank teller, serving diligently at Wells Fargo and First Citizens Bank. Her commitment to her work and her warm demeanor left a lasting impression on both colleagues and customers.

She was a devoted member of Mills River United Methodist Church, where her faith and fellowship were integral parts of her life. Her quiet strength and gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew her. Preceding her in death were her beloved parents, Seaman Sam Whitaker and Irene Bagwell Whitaker, along with her husband, Benjamin “Ben” Massey.

A graveside service to honor Shirley’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Whitaker-Moore Cemetery in Mills River with Reverend Luke Christy officiating. Shuler Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
