Shirley Ann James Carnal, a beloved mother, grandmother, and creative spirit, entered into eternal rest in our Lord’s loving arms on September 15, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on June 2, 1942, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Elaine and John James, Shirley lived a life rich with family, faith, and artistic passions.
She leaves behind a cherished legacy through her surviving family: her devoted son, Rodney Opat, and his wife, Debbie; her grandchildren, Ryan (Ciara), Tayler, and Jared Opat; her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Zachary Opat; her brother, John (Carolyn) James; her nieces, Dawn Scaffidi and Laurie (Bob) Ory; along with three great-nephews, one great-niece, and numerous other relatives who held her dear.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elaine James; her stepfather, Arvin Hannemann; her sister and brother in law, Jane and Larry Cynowa; and her nephews, Bobby James and John Baginski.
A faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church, Shirley was enveloped in the love of her church family and many close friends, who will remember her kindness and welcoming hugs when seeing her at church.
Shirley poured her creativity into every endeavor. She delighted in designing and remodeling homes, crafting elaborate sets for Vacation Bible School, and nurturing young hearts through her work with children. Renowned for her talents in cooking, hairdressing, gardening, showing dogs, painting, and drawing, she brought beauty and joy to all around her.
Shirley will be profoundly missed, her memory eternally treasured by those whose lives she touched.
Please join the family to honor Shirley at Hope Lutheran Church (3030 E Thunderbird Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032). Service date and time are still to be determined.
