Dr. Scott Stewart III, a pioneering pediatric heart surgeon at Strong Memorial Hospital, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, in Rochester, N.Y. He was 87.

Known for his quiet reserve and thoughtfulness in conversation, Scott was born on Dec. 16, 1937, in Rochester. Gifted with an inquisitive mind and a passion for learning, he attended Phillips Andover Academy, then earned an undergraduate degree from Williams College. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University followed by an internship at Johns Hopkins and residencies at Vanderbilt and at the University of Alabama, under Dr. John Kirkland.

Scott returned to Rochester in 1973, where he established new techniques in pediatric cardiac surgery and developed a team at Strong specializing in the treatment of pediatric heart disease. He dedicated his life to healing and service as a doctor, earning the respect of patients and colleagues alike for his calm presence, keen intellect and unwavering compassion.

A loving husband and devoted father, Scott had many passions. He found joy on the open water and spent countless hours sailing, which brought him freedom and peace. He was also an avid skier, motorcyclist, antique-car collector, reader and builder of model airplanes. He loved Springer Spaniels, Canandaigua Lake and country music.

Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Andy; sister Martha Stobbs of Atlanta; his sons Scott (and partner, Lara), of Nashville, Doug (Diana) of San Francisco; grandchildren Jackson, Saylor (Dharaa), Twyla; and nieces Lili Ball and Katherine Dobbs.
