Mr. Roy Van Johnson, Jr. of Hopewell, Virginia, age 74, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025.
Roy was born on April 5, 1951 in Petersburg, Virginia the son of the late Roy Van Johnson, Sr. and Marian Glover Johnson.
Roy was a graduate of Southside High School in Dinwiddie, VA. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany, South Korea, and Massachusetts. Roy also served in the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). Roy retired from the Army in 1992, after serving 20 years, then he worked as a Loss Prevention Specialist at the Walmart Distribution Center.
Throughout his life, Roy never met a stranger, he was always friendly to everyone. His smile was contagious. To know him, was to love him. Roy enjoyed fishing, playing football, and even coached his son’s little league basketball and football teams. Roy was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and New York Yankees, never missing a game.
Roy was married for 34 years to his devoted wife Lesia Baines Johnson who preceded him in death in November 2004.
Roy is survived by his two loving children, Roy Van Johnson, III of Petersburg, VA and his daughter, Latosha Johnson of Hopewell, VA; four sisters, Theresa Terry (Theron), Ruth Pride (Nathaniel) both of North Dinwiddie, VA, Joyce Thompson (Edward) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Iris Walker (Michael) of Hopewell, VA; two brothers, Roland Johnson of Harlan, Kentucky and Byron Johnson (Annie) of Petersburg, VA; two aunts, Joyce Davis and Doris Glover Piercy of North Dinwiddie, VA; several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded by his stepson, Willie Baines (Mary Ann) and his brother, Ronald Johnson.
Visitation will be Friday, September 12, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Tucker Celebration of Life Chapel, 415 Halifax Street, Petersburg, VA. Interment will follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park. Services will be livestreamed at https://youtube.com/live/j4Zh7hxl-h4?feature=share.
