Robin Rae Nelis passed away, unexpectedly at her home, following a brief illness on June 20, 2025. She was born on May 25,1965, in Minneapolis, MN, where she grew up and attended school. In the mid 1990’s she moved to Bad River, the place she considered to be her real home.
Rae, as she was known to close family and friends, was a caring mother, and a proud Anishinabe woman. She loved deeply, lived passionately, and had an unwavering faith in God. Rae found joy in the simple and sacred rhythms of the Northwood, spending time with her children, wildricing, and cooking. She loved the land, the traditions, and the water that surrounded her. She stood firmly for what she believed in; the rights of the Native American people, and the protection of Lake Superior waters. Rae was a member of the Philadelphia Church of God, following a path that gave her peace and strength throughout her life.
Rae is survived by her loving children Clairessa Salena Rae Nelis, and Buffalo Taylor Nelis. She is further survived by siblings, Renae Baldwin, Joseph A. Nelis Jr, and John B. Nelis, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Rae was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred C. Nelis and Joseph A. Nelis, Sr.
Robin Rae Nelis’s legacy of love, resilience, and conviction will live on through her children and all who knew her.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mountain Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Ashland and Mellen, WI.
