Obituary for Remigia Rapi Nieves Dato-on
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved grandmother, mother and wife, Remigia Rapi Nieves Dato-on (aka Remy, Manay Rem, Auntie Remy, Tita Remy, Lola, Ninang, Nanay, Lola Auntie), who departed this life peacefully on Sunday, October 5th 2025 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her family. She was 87 years old.
Born in the Philippines, Remy lived a life defined by unwavering love, selflessness, and strength. She was a proud graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) – The Catholic University of the Philippines & Asia’s oldest existing university – where she studied Nursing. She bravely moved to the United States where she dedicated her life to care for others. Highlights of her career include being a devoted Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse, providing intensive medical care for premature and critically ill newborns at RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, and working as a pediatric emergency room (ER) nurse at the University of Chicago Hospital. For many years, her expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her patients helped saved countless lives and touched the hearts of many. Remy did not retire by personal choice. After experiencing two strokes, she was left with significant health challenges that made it impossible to continue working. Despite these hardships, she never lost her spirit.
In addition to her work as a nurse, Remy was a devout Catholic whose faith was her foundation. She found peace in prayer and lived her life with grace, humility, and a deep love for God. Her faith carried her through many challenges, from surviving multiple strokes to enduring the pain, surgeries and recoveries from a broken hip and broken leg, to her final battle with cancer. She faced each trial with incredible strength, resilience, and a heart full of love for her family.
Remy was a second mother, a mentor, and a protector for countless others. She played a foundational role in the lives of many of her relatives, ensuring that their dreams could be realized, often by making great sacrifices of her own. Education was one of her greatest passions, and she made it her mission to see her family succeed. Through quiet resilience, she helped send multiple family members to school, always believing in their potential even when they doubted themselves. Her belief in the power of knowledge, hard work, and kindness has left a legacy that will ripple through generations.
Remy’s greatest joy was her family. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, and she treated everyone she met with kindness and compassion. Children always brought her joy, and any time a baby was placed in her arms her smile would light up a room! Her home was always a place of warmth, laughter (she loved to laugh), and hospitality (she loved to feed people). She created countless cherished memories with her loved ones.
Our beloved Remy is survived by her husband Floreste, daughter Floremy Nieda, son-in-law Robert, and grandsons RJ and Joseph, all of whom will carry her legacy forward with pride and gratitude.
Though words can never fully capture the life she lived or the love she gave, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in the lives she shaped and the hearts she touched. We will miss her laughter, her stories, her strength—and most of all, her boundless love.
Rest in heaven, Mom, Lola, Manay, Auntie, Tita, Lola, Ninang, Nanay, Lola Auntie Remy, po. You’ve earned your peace.
Your love was our greatest gift, and your memory will forever be our treasure. Thank you for your love, for your sacrifices, for everything.
