Ramona O. Avalos, 85 of Mesilla, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, in her home.
Ramona, also known as Monchie, was born in Las Cruces to Jesus and Tomasa Zuniga on February 25, 1940. She graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1959, where she participated in basketball and received a letter. She married Federico Avalos on July 9, 1960. She worked as a receptionist for years in the medical field. She then became the bookkeeper of the family business, Sierra Vista Plumbing. She was also the BEST BAKER, who would set up a shop in Mesilla Plaza on Thursdays and Saturday mornings to sell her baked goods. Brownies were the favorite, as multiple people would say, not just the family. She was also known for her aprons that she would sew and sell. She would also participate in the bazaar sales at Mesilla Elementary.
She was a religious woman and an active member of the Basilica of San Albino until the day she fell ill.
Ramona is preceded in death by her husband, Federico Avalos. Her parents, Jesus & Tomasa Zuniga, brothers Felipe Zuniga, Tomas Zuniga, and Adolfo Zuniga. Her son-in-law, Ray Grajeda.
Ramona is survived by her daughter, Joanna Grajeda, and son David & wife Monique Avalos. Her grandchildren Marina Riley (Jesse), Tori Gonzalez (Alex), Anelisa Avalos (Fabian), and Katlyn Avalos. Her great-grandchildren, Gabriella Burks, Josiah Burks, Aurora Gonzalez, Elias Barron, Elise Gonzalez, and Zabias King Munoz. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren all meant the world to her.
The pallbearers are Phil Zuniga, Mike Zuniga, Michael Avalos, Alex Gonzalez, Jesse Barron, and Fabian Munoz.
A rosary is scheduled at 11:30 am on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Basilica of San Albino, led by Ronnie Limon. Mass will be at noon, officiated by Father Chris Williams. Burial will follow at San Albino Cemetery in Mesilla.
