Petra Flores

Petra Flores was born on February 15, 1936, on La Regina in Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico, to her parents, Jesus and Augustina Fierro. She grew up surrounded by the love of her five brothers and three sisters—Pedro, Antonio, Benito, Felix, Luz, Chela, Hector, and Diega—whom she adored deeply.

In 1956, Petra and her brother Pedro immigrated to the United States and worked together in the fields of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California to support their family back in Mexico. Petra was instrumental in helping her siblings follow in her footsteps and come to the U.S. to pursue the American Dream.

In June of 1959, Petra married the love of her life, Hector Flores, and together they had four children—Maximino, Olga, Olivia, and Hector Jr.—as well as raising three foster children: Paul, Peter, and Albert. Petra and Hector were devout Catholics and active members of their parish, Most Holy Trinity Church in San José, California. They served as Eucharistic Ministers and volunteered with Los Amigos, a community group that supported the church by organizing fundraisers and serving meals after Mass in the MHT Hall. Petra had a deep devotion to the Catholic Church and to La Virgen de Guadalupe.

As a mother—Petra was loving, strong, dependable and fiercely loyal. She held high expectations and ran a tight ship while also creating unforgettable memories with their epic family camping trips in Yosemite and road trips to visit family from Texas to California. Petra and Hector valued education and all of their children are college graduates and are pillars of pride in their hearts.

Petra loved to sing and write songs especially with her brother Felix. She participated in the Chicano theater group Teatro de los Pobres, where she enjoyed performing in the production Amor y Dólar. She cherished time spent with all of her siblings—gathering around her dining room table playing cards and dominoes, sharing laughter and stories for hours on end.

Petra also had a knack for real estate and enjoyed finding properties to invest in, creating a real estate portfolio that holds strong to this day. A lifelong learner and tireless worker, Petra held jobs at Teledyne Semiconductor and Levi Strauss, and later, in her 50s, attended Evergreen Valley Community College to earn her AA in Child Development, ultimately becoming a Head Start teacher—a role she took on with the same love and dedication she gave her family. Alejandra, her granddaughter, was lucky enough to have her grandma as her Head Start preschool teacher.

Petra took immense pride in being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She is deeply loved by her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished with her whole heart. She found joy in making them laugh and made sure they felt loved. Petra has amazing in-laws and we can’t forget to mention her daughter-in-law, Zari, and her sons-in-law, Javier and Joseph, whose support, kindness, and presence meant so much to her and the whole family—through both joyful moments and difficult times.

Petra y Héctor eran católicos devotos y miembros activos de su parroquia, Most Holy Trinity Church, en San José, California. Sirvieron como ministros de la Eucaristía y fueron voluntarios con Los Amigos, un grupo comunitario que apoyaba a la iglesia organizando recaudaciones de fondos y sirviendo comidas después de la misa en el salón parroquial. Petra tenía una profunda devoción a la Iglesia Católica y a La Virgen de Guadalupe.

Como madre, Petra fue amorosa, fuerte, confiable y leal hasta el alma. Tenía expectativas altas y dirigía su hogar con firmeza, pero al mismo tiempo creó recuerdos inolvidables, como los épicos viajes familiares de campamento en yosemite y los viajes por carretera para visitar a familiares desde Texas hasta California. Petra y Héctor valoraban la educación, y los cuatro hijos se graduaron de la universidad, siendo un motivo de gran orgullo para ellos.

A Petra le encantaba cantar y escribir canciones, especialmente con su hermano Félix. Participó en el grupo de teatro chicano Teatro de los Pobres, donde disfrutaba actuar en la obra Amor y Dólar. Disfrutaba profundamente pasar tiempo con sus hermanos y hermanas—reuniéndose alrededor de la mesa del comedor para jugar cartas y dominó, reírse y compartir historias durante horas.

Petra también tenía un gran instinto para los bienes raíces y disfrutaba encontrar propiedades para invertir, creando un portafolio que sigue vigente hasta el día de hoy. Fue una aprendiz de por vida y una trabajadora incansable. Trabajó en Teledyne Semiconductor y Levi Strauss, y más adelante, en sus cincuentas, asistió a Evergreen Valley Community College, donde obtuvo su Título de Asociado en Desarrollo Infantil, lo que la llevó a convertirse en maestra de Head Start, un rol que desempeñó con el mismo amor y dedicación con que cuidaba a su familia. Su nieta Alejandra tuvo la suerte de tener a su abuelita como maestra de preescolar en Head Start.

Petra sentía un inmenso orgullo de ser abuela y bisabuela. Sus 10 nietos y 13 bisnietos la amaban profundamente, y ella los adoraba con todo su corazón. Encontraba alegría en hacerlos reír y siempre se aseguraba de que se sintieran amados. Petra también fue bendecida con maravillables yernos y nuera. No podemos olvidar cuánto quería a su nuera, Zari, y a sus yernos, Javier y Joseph, cuyo apoyo, cariño y presencia significaron tanto para ella y para toda la familia—en los momentos alegres y también en los más difíciles.
