Patricia Ann Miller departed this world on September 14, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Alan, and their reunion was no doubt a joyous one.
Patricia, who was usually known as Pat but actually preferred to be called Patty or Tricia, was born on May 11, 1944, in Winchester, Indiana, to Frank and Eleanor Murray. The family relocated to Sweetser, Indiana, where Patricia graduated from Oak Hill High School. She met her future husband while attending Oak Hill and eventually agreed to a date despite rebuffing several initial requests. Patricia went on to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, and she and Alan were wed on August 22, 1965, shortly after Patricia’s graduation. She later obtained a master’s degree from Ball State University as well.
Patricia led a life of quiet service, and she especially loved teaching. She began employment with the Marion Community Schools in 1965 and spent most of her career teaching first grade. She believed that the best part of her job was teaching students to read, and she certainly taught many. It was not uncommon for her to encounter past students who, even as adults, would lovingly remember “Mrs. Miller” and greet her with hugs. Patricia considered retiring a few times over the years, and eventually moved to part-time employment, but she continued working with the kids she loved until the COVID-related school closures convinced her it was probably time to quit, in 2020.
Aside from teaching, Patricia also loved giving of herself through service to College Wesleyan Church, where she and her husband were members. She volunteered with Gilead Ministries of Marion and cared deeply for the work of Building Tomorrow, a school-building organization. She was always thankful for opportunities to share her home with friends and family, and she ensured that no visitor would ever leave hungry. She also loved to travel and was thankful that she and Alan had been able to experience so much of the world together.
Patricia is survived by her brother, Robert (Jan) Murray; daughter, Jennifer (Kevin) O’Sullivan; grandchildren, Matthew (Julie) Newcomer, Mitchell (Melanie Bucciero) Newcomer, and Madison (Matthew) Whiles; step-grandsons, Colin O’Sullivan, Jared O’Sullivan, and Miles O’Sullivan; and great-grandchildren, Addy and Ben.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at College Wesleyan Church, 200 E. 38th St., Marion, IN.
Immediately following visitation, a service to celebrate Patricia’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Emily Vermilya officiating. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Building Tomorrow of Indianapolis, www.buildingtomorrow.org.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
