Northern Nevada Dream Center responds to increasing food needs amid SNAP uncertainty, asks for community donations

The Northern Nevada Dream Center (NNDC) is responding to a surge in food insecurity across the region, as families face potential delays or interruptions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

In recent weeks, NNDC’s mobile food trucks have run out of food during distributions for the first time in the organization’s history, highlighting the urgent need for community support. In Nevada, approximately 15% of residents — 495,000 people, including 195,000 children — rely on SNAP benefits, with the national average benefit totaling just $6 per day ($188/month).

“Even before SNAP benefits may be impacted, we’re already seeing families come to us in record numbers,” said Susan Sorenson, Executive Director of NNDC. “This is a critical moment for our community. We’re working alongside other nonprofits and local/state programs to ensure no one falls through the cracks, but we can’t do it without the generosity and partnership of our supporters.”

NNDC is actively seeking support through:

  • Financial donations through our virtual food drive — allowing the purchase of groceries in bulk to meet the most urgent needs

  • Food donations — non-perishable and ready-to-eat items

  • Volunteers — to help manage the increase in distribution demands.

About Northern Nevada Dream Center:
