NHP: Impairment suspected in wrong way crash on US-50 East in Carson City

The Nevada Highway Patrol said impairment is suspected in Wednesday night’s vehicle crash on Highway 50 East in Carson City that was caused by a wrong way driver.

An adult female driver of an Infiniti sedan is suspected of causing the crash with another vehicle after nearly hitting an NHP trooper. The crash erupted into flames and caused the shutdown of US-50 East for the investigation.

Drivers of both vehicles suffered injuries and a child was taken to the hospital and was reported to be uninjured. NHP Sgt. Chris Brown confirmed Saturday that impairment is suspected on the part of the Infiniti driver.

On Wednesday at around 8:14 p.m., an NHP trooper with the working in the area of US-50 and Flint Road in Carson City was nearly struck by the Infiniti sedan that was traveling westbound in the wrong way direction into the eastbound travel lanes.

The Infiniti crashed into a Hyundai, which immediately sparked a fire in the engine compartment and undercarriage of the Hyundai, according to NHP.

The NHP trooper immediately began life saving measures and worked to remove the occupants of the burning Hyundai, ensuring the fire was extinguished and requesting additional emergency resources, according to NHP.

After the occupants of the Hyundai were in a safer location, NHP troopers began providing emergency medical care for the occupants.

According to NHP, the preliminary investigation indicates that a 2016 Infiniti sedan was traveling westbound in the eastbound travel lanes of US-50 near Flint Road.

The Infiniti sedan crashed into the front of a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe sports utility vehicle that was traveling eastbound in the eastbound travel lanes.

The driver of the Infiniti, an adult female, was taken to a local area hospital with reportedly serious injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, an adult female, was taken to a local area hospital with reportedly serious injuries.

The passenger of the Hyundai, a child, was transported to a local area hospital with reportedly no injuries.

“The Nevada Highway Patrol would also like to thank the Good Samaritans who stopped and helped our Trooper with the initial response and rescue efforts,” said Nevada Highway Patrol Major Anthony Munoz. “Protecting life is truly a community effort.”

The crash is being investigated by the Patrol Northern Command, Major Incident Reconstruction Team.
