Molly Kay Smith, 55, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. She was born on October 7, 1969, in Springfield, IL, the daughter of Patrick “Himself” Shea and Judith A. Cawley Shea. She married the love of her life, Vince E. Smith on November 16, 1996, and he survives.
Also surviving are her children: Joshua N. Smith of Denver, CO, Emma M. (Jonathan) Gerhardt of Peoria, and Lauren A. Smith of Springfield; sister, Mary A. (Michael) Richey; brother, Patrick M. (Mary) Shea of Springfield; nieces and nephews, Michael (Megan) Richey, Matthew Richey, Anna Shea, and Ryan Shea.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Molly was a 1987 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and went on to work for the City of Springfield in Human Resources, serving for 37 years. Her faith was important to her and was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
She was an avid reader, especially a good romance novel. However, to sum her up, many would say she could be described as: Faith, Family, and Notre Dame Football.
Molly left an impression on this world and will continue to do so through the efforts of Gift of Hope. Her affectionate smile and vibrant personality will be sorely missed.
Visitation: 4:00 – 7:00 pm, Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, beginning with a prayer service.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Friedel officiating. A burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
