Michael Starkes

It is with profound sadness that Michael’s family continues to miss him, since he was last seen on July 20, 2025. Michael is sorrowfully missed by his loving mother, Gerri Barbour Starkes, his devoted father, Bob Starkes Sr. (Linda), and his brother Bob (Kim). His beautiful nieces Rachel and Megan and their mother, Peggy, will continue to cherish their many special memories with beloved Uncle Mike. Michael is also sadly missed by his loving aunts and uncles, and many friends.

Throughout his life, Michael searched this world for “peace and love”. He had an innate sense of goodness and a heart that found meaning in helping others. Michael searched for beauty in this life and found it when listening to a peaceful song and having deep conversations with his mother; moose hunting and fishing at the cabin with his father, brother and friends; setting up the Christmas lights with Rachel and Megan; having a cup of tea with Peggy; hiking with his beloved dog Brynlee; staying active; spending time in nature; and, putting a smile on the face of anyone in his company, whenever he could. Michael grew up in the Goulds, where he formed many deep and lasting friendships, with special mention to his dear friends Robby Boland and Josh Lee. Many happy memories were made with the boys, from long nights full of good times to skydiving in Vegas, and his friends will continue to hold these memories close.

Michael gathered many accolades in his lifetime. He completed service in the offshore industry, worked as an Emergency Response Firefighter in Bull Arm with the Hebron project, and has been a devoted member of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department since 2016. He was passionate about training and sought every opportunity for skill development to excel at his profession. Throughout his career, he made significant and meaningful connections with his comrades, particularly with his mentor, Jack Hickey. Despite Michael’s success, he is most missed for the characteristics that came without accolades: being a loving son and uncle; standing up for what he believed in; and, his desire to make this world a better place.

Michael struggled significantly within the last five years due to mental health issues. He exhibited as much strength, resilience and courage throughout this painful battle as he did during his career as a firefighter.

Family and friends are welcome to gather at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s, on Monday, July 28 from 2-9 p.m. A Celebration of Michael’s Life will be held at Wesley United Church, 101 Patrick St., St. John’s, on Tuesday, July 29 at 2pm.

Donations in his honour can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or the SPCA. Flowers are graciously accepted.
