Michael E. Lawson, a dedicated librarian and avid golfer, passed away peacefully at his residence in Flat Rock, North Carolina, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on June 26, 1945, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Michael lived a life full of passion and service.
For four decades, Michael devoted himself to the Montgomery County, Maryland School System as a librarian. His commitment to education and his belief in the power of knowledge left an indelible mark on countless students and educators. Michael’s quiet dedication to his work demonstrated the profound impact of a lifetime spent nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning.
Outside of his professional life, Michael found joy in the game of golf. He not only enjoyed playing but also thrived in leadership, serving proudly as the president of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association. His enthusiasm for the sport was infectious, inspiring those around him to embrace both the challenges and joys of the game.
Michael was preceded in death by his beloved parents, James and Bessie Petty Lawson; and one brother, Roger Carlton Lawson. He is survived by his brother, Lionel Lawson of Summerville, South Carolina, who remembers him as a loving and supportive sibling.
In honor of Michael’s wishes, a private inurnment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, South Carolina. As we remember Michael, let us be inspired by his lifelong commitment to education and his zest for life. His legacy is one of quiet strength, dedication, and a love for the simple pleasures that enriched his journey.
