Mary Lou Barry

Mary Lou Bihl Barry, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, passed away on September 5 at age 81—ten months to the day after the passing of her husband and best friend, Joe. Those who knew her believe she died of a broken heart, and now she is reunited with Joe in eternal peace.

Born in Wheelersburg, Ohio, in 1943, Mary Lou was the apple of her father’s eye and a proud 4-H beauty queen. She married the love of her life, Joe Barry, with whom she shared 58 years of laughter, adventure, and unwavering partnership. Together, they built a life filled with love and family.

Mary Lou devoted her career to teaching, spending most of her years as a first-grade teacher. She was widely admired and respected as one of the best in her profession—known for her skill in the classroom, her thoughtful nature, and the genuine care she poured into her students.

Mary Lou was meticulous about keeping a spotless home. Her family often teased that “no one would care that she died with a clean house”—and yet, true to form, she did. Lou loved the sun, the beach, and a good book. She was also known for always having a big glass of red wine in her hand, for her joy in mowing the lawn, and for maintaining the most beautiful yard in the neighborhood.

In the last year, she was lovingly cared for in a memory care unit just a few miles from her son. She was blessed to have visits from her sister, niece, and dear friends before she passed. While the number of friends she loved is too great to list, she had a wonderful circle of women in Oxford—the Birthday Girls, her book club, and lifelong friends who became family, especially the Wickhams, Morrises, Robinsons, Thomases, and of course, Julie.

Her greatest pride and joy, however, was her family. She loved her children and built her world around her seven grandchildren, never missing a chance to cheer them on, spoil them with love, or remind them how deeply they were adored.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Barry Davis, and her partner, David Azia; her son, Joseph J. Barry, and his wife, Maureen; and her seven adored grandchildren: Jackson, Kate, Charlie, and Griffin Davis, and PJ, Patrick, and Joseph Barry. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Rhees; brother-in-law, Jack Barry; sisters-in-law, Judy Cook and Mary Hermann; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mildred Turner Bihl; her husband, Joe; her brothers, Joe and Jim Bihl; and her brother-in-law, Mike Barry.

A celebration of life and graveside service are being planned in Oxford, Ohio, where Mary Lou will be buried next to her husband. The date of service will be determined at a later time.
