Louis Duane Koplau II, age 80, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Louis was born on November 6, 1944, in Los Angeles County, California, to the late Louis Fritz Koplau and Elizabeth Kopi Koplau. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Karen Marie Koplau, and his son, Steven Koplau.
Louis was a proud patriot and veteran who honorably served in the United States Army for six years. His time in the military was a point of great pride, reflecting his deep love for his country and his unwavering commitment to service. A man deeply connected to the earth, Louis had a remarkable green thumb and could bring any patch of soil to life. No matter where he lived, he would create vibrant gardens that reflected his care, patience, and appreciation for nature’s beauty. He was happiest outdoors, preferring the fresh air and open skies to the confines of four walls. One of his favorite traditions was camping with his family, whether setting up tents in the woods or sitting around a campfire, it was their special version of a vacation. He also enjoyed recreational shooting, sharing both the skill and discipline of the sport with his family.
Louis lived a colorful and unconventional life, filled with curiosity, hard work, and a deep love for both plants and animals. In the 1960s, he spent three unforgettable years working with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, a chapter that reflected his adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace the unusual. His passion for the natural world was evident throughout his life. Louis found joy in nurturing plants and caring for animals, which led him to spend part of his career working at a zoo. A true jack of all trades, Louis wore many hats over the years. He served as an embalmer at a funeral home in Florida, a role that required compassion, precision, and quiet strength. Later, he shifted gears entirely and took on the demanding work of roofing, never shying away from hard labor or learning something new.
Louis will be remembered for his diverse experiences, his love for life in all its forms, and his willingness to follow his passions wherever they led him.
Those left to cherish Louis’ memory are his children, Louis Koplau III, and fiancée, Kandace Starkey, both of Marion; Jessica Koplau, of Kalispell, Montana; and his eight grandchildren, Jareb, Louis IV, Samuel, Anthony, Isabella, Sophia, Finley, and Victoria. He is also survived by his special little dog, Peanut, whom he loved very much.
In keeping with Louis’s wishes, no service will be held at this time.
