Leif Thomas Berrens, age 12, of Waupaca, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 27, 2025. He was born on February 14, 2013 in Neenah, WI, the son of Justin and Kristy (Schmoldt) Berrens and was washed in the waters of baptism on March 17, 2013.
Leif was currently a sixth grader at Waupaca Middle School where he excelled in baseball and weight lifting and he played football with the Stevens Point Mashers. His coaches and mentors Don Krihak, John Hopfensperger and Brady Terrill made a great impact on his athletic endeavors. Leif also loved being outdoors exploring in the woods and hanging out in the barn, as well as hunting and fishing. Leif also had just recently started to learn how to play the electric guitar. He was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Fremont where he served as an acolyte and was attending catechism class and Sunday School . Even though Leif’s life here on earth ended too soon, his family takes great comfort knowing that Leif knew his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and they will all be reunited in heaven again.
Leif is survived by his parents, Justin “Buck” and Kristy; his siblings, Landen, UWSP, Lainey, Porter and Violet Berrens, at home; his paternal grandparents, Jeffry and Jackie Berrens, Waupaca; his maternal grandparents, Tom & Patti Schmoldt, Fremont; his paternal great-grandmother, Beatrice Berrens, his maternal great-grandmother, Betty Schmoldt; his aunts, uncles and cousins, Tina (Jake) Wagner, and their children, Bridget, Josh, Gianna, Caleb, Ella and Maria; Brandon(Josey)Schmoldt, and their children, Owen, Ryan, Tessa and Jordy; Jennifer (Rick) Ryan, and their children, Lauren, Braeden and Caitlin; Jeff (Nicole) Berrens, and their children, James and Jack and Jason (Ashley) Berrens, and their children, Jayson “Butters” and Brooklyn; great-aunts and uncles, other relatives and many, many friends, and his three beagles, Daisy, Dutch and Zoey. He was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents, Howard and Bernice Baumgart and Joseph Berrens, his maternal great-grandparents, Clifford and Marie Hansen and Arden Schmoldt, and three cousins, Annie Hansen, Scott and Blake Radtke.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, 107 Tustin Rd., Fremont. Pastor Mark Drengler will officiate. (Due to construction on Tustin Rd., please use Lind Street to enter the church parking lot). Visitation will be held at Lewin Funeral Home, 210 W. Main St., Fremont on Thursday, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and on Friday, at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in memory of Leif. Online condolences may be made at www.lewinfuneralhome.com.
Leif’s family would like to extend a huge thank you to the Waupaca and surrounding communities for the outpouring of support and love. Your care and compassion goes beyond measure and is so greatly appreciated. There are no words to express how grateful we are to have you all in this time of sadness.
