Mr. Larry Kent McCoy, age 83, of Warrensville, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Ashe County on March 9, 1942, to the late Joseph Walter and Goldie Faye Elizabeth Graybeal McCoy.
Mr. McCoy worked for 17 years with the NCDOT bridge crew. After retiring, he returned home to farm tobacco, beans, and cattle, dedicating his life to hard work and his love of the land.
He married the love of his life, Mary Nell Roten, and they shared 65 years of marriage. A devoted husband, he woke up every morning with a smile on his face and lovingly called her “Angel.”
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Deforest McCoy, Walter Thomas McCoy, and Donnie McCoy, and a sister, June Richardson.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Nell Roten McCoy; a son, Mike “Cowboy” McCoy and wife, Diane, of Warrensville; a daughter, Evelyn Shoemake and husband, Mike, of Warrensville; two brothers, Herbert McCoy and wife, Earl Jean, and Harold McCoy and wife, Shirley, all of Zionsville; three grandchildren, Jessica Rupard and husband, Matthew, of Jefferson, Brian Shoemake and wife, Allie, of Warrensville, and Ethan McCoy and wife, Rachall, of Creston; five great-grandchildren, Sophie Shoemake, Ada Shoemake, Emma Rupard, Sara Rupard, and Etta Rupard; an honorary granddaughter, Paige Roten, of Warrensville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Darrell Graybeal and Rev. Herbert McCoy officiating. Burial will follow in the Roten & Graybeal Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00–3:00 p.m. on Thursday, two hours prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers will be Ethan McCoy, Brian Shoemake, Matthew Rupard, Richard Woods, David Roten, and George Roten. Honorary pallbearers are Joe Roten, Jim Roten, and Mike Shoemake.
