Niko (Khera Joy) Rufino-Smiley of Kendall Park, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday May 24, 2024. Khera was born in New York, New York on November 15,1992.
From a young age, Niko had a passion for the written word, performing and culinary arts. In young adulthood they developed exceptional skills in organization, art and design. Niko graduated Moravian College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and went on to enjoy a career as an Executive Assistant at Princeton Theological Center, Belmont Charter School and School of Rock. They always loved working with kids.
Niko was a consummate artist, expressing themselves in a variety of media as a musician, singer, multi-media artist, and fine art of cooking. They studied yoga, astrology and tarot and received their yoga teacher certification in 2021. Niko adored and cared for an array of beloved pets. The wisdom they shared with others has made a lasting impact on the hearts of many.
Niko was known for their big beautiful soulful brown eyes, bright smile, loving heart and fierce independence. They had an extensive knowledge of popular culture, literature, poetry, television and film. Their vast vocabulary and buoyant, expressive style were a fountain of delight. Niko was a fan of simple pleasures such as moments savored in a cup of tea or coffee and a good book.
Niko Rufino-Smiley was predeceased by their beloved grandparents Aaron and Ruth Berkowitz and Mercedes Rufino. They are survived by their spouse Hann Rufino-Smiley; brothers Ezra, Rafael and Kachi Rufino; sister Maya Rufino and her partner Jon Boustania; father Manuel Rufino, and mother Linda Berkowitz.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to ASPCA orĀ World Central Kitchen.
Arrangements are under the direction of The Mather-Hodge Funeral Home / Star of David Memorial Chapel of Princeton. A memorial service will take place at The Princeton Cemetery on Sunday May 26, 2024 at 10:00am. Shiva to be observed at the Berkowitz home on Sunday from noon to 3pm; Monday from 2-5pm; Tuesday and Wednesday from 1-4pm and 7-9pm.
