Joseph “Joe” William Smolski, Jr., of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on March 26, 1949, in Wayne, Nebraska, Joe lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service. Joe’s journey was one of resilience and inspiration. After earning his BA in accounting from San Diego State University, he embarked on a distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the owner of Smolski & Baker-Hudgins CPAs in Hendersonville, where he served his clients with integrity and expertise.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Joe’s time stationed in Germany played a pivotal role in his life. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Polly Crabtree, who was teaching 5th grade for the Department of Defense in Austria. Their marriage of 52 years stands as a testament to their enduring love and partnership.
Joe’s greatest joy came from his family. He cherished spending time with his beloved grandchildren, and his legacy lives on through them. He is survived by his devoted wife, Polly; his children, Elizabeth Smolski, Edwin Smolski (Andrew), and William Smolski (Alisha Worth); and his treasured grandchildren, Max Miklowcic, Everett Miklowcic, and Brooks Miklowcic. He also leaves behind his siblings, Jean Sitton, Jim Smolski (Judy), and John Smolski, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph William Smolski, Sr. and Marie Kelley Smolski, and his sister, Susan Kucharyson. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is reunited with them in peace.
In honor of Joe’s spirit, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Shuler Funeral Home has the honor of serving the Smolski family during this difficult time. Joe’s life was a testament to his values: love, service, and family. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of kindness, leadership, and devotion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
